May Baldwin

May Baldwin, a prolific writer of books for girls between 1900 and 1940, was born in 1862 in Lucknow, India and died in Bournemouth in 1950. An excellent linguist, she had friends in many parts of the world, and her books on schoolgirl life in Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Singapore and various colonies are all based on visits she made to these friends; she also spent several years during the 1920s living with her brother in Kenya. Click here for a list of her books in order of publication illustrated with scans from books in my own collection.

Bessie Marchant

Born Elizabeth Marchant in 1862 in Petham, Kent, England, she married Jabez Ambrose Comfort (a Baptist Minister) in 1889 and died 1941 in Charlbury, Oxfordshire, England. Another prolific author with over 150 titles to her name, her books are set all over the world - despite the fact that unlike May Baldwin she never left England. Her adventurous tales earned her a reputation as 'The Girl's Henty'. Click here for a list of her books in order of publication:

My thanks to Lia McGunigle for the time and trouble she has taken scanning and supplying me with images from her own collection of Bessie Marchant's book to fill in numerous gaps

Further details of both these authors can be found in The Encyclopaedia of Girls' School Stories by Sue Sims and Hilary Clare, that is if you are lucky enough to be able to get your hands on a copy!
